• Vehicles braking or turning, entering the road or your lane ahead of you, or coming from behind you.

• Opening car doors of parked vehicles.

• Pedestrians starting to move.

• Children or pets playing near the road.

• Potholes, manhole covers, railroad tracks, expansion joints, road or sidewalk construction, debris, and other obstacles that could cause you to swerve abruplty into other vehicles, tripo over the wheel, or have an accident.

• The many hazards and distractions that can occur during a bike ride.

5. Use designated bike lanes, bike-specific paths, or ride as close as possible to the edge of the road, in the direction of traffic or as indicated by local laws.

6. Stop at stop signs and traffic lights; reduce speed and look both ways at intersections. Remember that a bicycle always loses in a collision with a motor vehicle, so be prepared to yield even if you have the right of way.

7. Use approved hand signals to indicate turns and stops.

8. Never ride with headphones, as they can obscure traffic sounds and emergency sirens, prevent you from focusiing on your surrondings, and their cables can become entangled in the moving parts of the bicycle, causing you to lose control.

10. Do not transport anything that obstruct your vision or hinders full control of the bicycle, or that could become entangled in the moving parts of the bicycle.

11. Never hold into another vehicle to avoid pedaling.
